Wealth and poverty have always existed, and they have never been friends. Scripture has much to say regarding wealth and poverty, but these are not easy conversations for us to have. In the book of James, the author calls believers to engage in the conversation and deepen their faith in God in the process.

In our first lesson, we will reflect on what it means to be a “doer” of the word rather than just a “hearer.” It is easy for us to get caught up in worshiping God and being the type of person we think a Christian should be. It is more difficult to keep our eyes open to see people in great need and reflect honestly upon our own lives with regard to God’s word. God’s perspective on our spiritual lives is likely to be different from our own. Regular reflection, prayer, and living in community with other believers can help us to see the truth. James calls us to be honest about our inner life and be aware of our neighbor’s needs.

James also reminds us that partiality has no place in the life of a Christian. God is the only rightful Judge, and we must acknowl- edge that God has a special concern for the poor. Believers must not use power for selfish ends. If we refuse to notice the needs of others and neglect doing something about them, our faith really means nothing.

In James 4, the writer encourages believers to provide for their own needs with humility and generosity. James warns that God must be at the center of one’s life plans and financial goals. Any other attitude is arrogant and prideful, a further example of dead faith.

Finally, James condemns powerful people who delight in excessive consumerism, fraudulent employment practices, and self-indulgence. At the same time, James encourages those who are oppressed to be patient and endure until the Lord comes.
