“Seeking the Messiah”

This six-session unit focuses on seeking—seeking the Messiah and searching to understand Christ’s impact on our lives. The first session focuses particularly on the Israelites’ search for reconciliation with God. While they seemed to feel as if God was “hiding too well,” they continued to seek to be restored in right relationship with God. In God’s response to the Israelites’ plea, God sent Jesus to the world for all of humanity. The theme of the first session undergirds the other five: Jesus came to reconcile God with God’s people. Thus, the other sessions are framed in the celebration of Advent, the coming of Christ.

In sessions two, three, and four, the youth will continue to “seek.” Though the world often tries to hide the Truth, the study of the scriptures will make it clear that only through Christ can we find true peace, justice, and hope. Sessions five and six explore the Christmas narrative and human opposition to God’s offering of reconciliation. The youth will be challenged to view familiar stories in fresh and powerful ways. They will be encouraged to realize how their lives intersect with the Gospel. They will be provided with the opportunity to seek—and find—the Messiah.
