Reflections Devotional "Never Abandoned"
Ezra 9:5-15
Reflect
Tom was well respected in his community and a deacon in his church. He was married to Marie, his high school sweetheart, for more than twenty years. They lived with their three successful kids in a lovely brick home in a tree-lined neighborhood. He had more friends than he could count. By all appearances Tom’s life looked ideal, but no one knew the real story.
For years, Tom hid his gambling addiction from his wife. Since he was a banker, Tom handled all the bills, online accounts, and investments, and Marie never questioned him. When Tom’s son graduated from high school and was ready to start college, the tuition was due, but the money was gone.
Shame told Tom that getting the gun was a good solution. Shame told him that the insurance money was more valuable than his life. Shame lied to Tom, then pulled the trigger.
Shame is powerful, and it destroys. We all know the horrible weight of not wanting to lift our heads to face our reflection in the mirror—let alone face God. Shame brings guilt, regret, and embarrassment.
Today we read about Ezra, wracked with guilt and shame for the sins of his people. He throws himself before God, lamenting, My God, I am too ashamed and embarrassed to lift my face to you (v. 6). Ezra knows shame. But Ezra also reminds us that even when we feel enslaved to guilt, regret, and shame, God will not abandon us. Instead, when we cry out in repentance, God reveals faithfulness and mercy. Don’t let shame keep you from God. Cry out to the one who knows your story and offers healing, forgiveness, and grace every time.
Consider
When has shame kept you from facing God?
Pray
Mighty Forgiver, help us cry out to you when we recognize our sin. Remove our shame, and show us your way to abundant grace, mercy, and steadfast love. Amen
