Connections 07.14.2019: God and Country

What were you doing on July 4? Did you celebrate Independence Day, and if so, how? My family and I enjoyed our usual festivities for July 4, spending the day with our friends by their pool, eating burgers and hot dogs.

Caring for Country

Even standing in line at the National Archives is inspiring. The original Declaration of Independence is on the left: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness . . . . That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”

Context and Community

It was the summer of 1976; I had just finished my freshman year at Mercer University. I was serving as the Associate Pastor for a small Baptist church way out in the Georgia countryside.
