Brief Description

God works among all of God’s people, including children. This unit reminds us of the children in Scripture who acted so that others could know God’s love. Many of us grew up learning that “children should be seen and not heard.” God, however, would have us remember that children should not only be seen and heard but should also be taken seriously. Often, children give us great examples of faith to follow.

In this unit, we will explore the story of Miriam, Moses’ sister, as we ask ourselves, “What bold action is God calling me to take?” Miriam boldly spoke up for her brother, which allowed the future liberator to find a home in Egypt. When we study the story of Joseph the dreamer, we will ask, “What dreams for the future should I embrace?” Joseph embraced his future, no matter the cost to himself or his family. In 2 Kings 5, we encounter an unnamed slave girl who helps the powerful military leader Naaman receive healing from God. Her faith prompts us to ask, “Whom can I tell about God’s love and power?” Finally, we will focus on the familiar story of Jesus’ feeding of the five thousand. In that story, a young boy shares his lunch, which provides the resources for Jesus to act. Through this story, we will ask, “What can I share with others in Jesus’ name?”

These four examples of children who are faithful to God help us recognize that no one is too young or insignificant to participate in the mission of God.
