“Love in Action”

Love doesn’t sit still for long! This unit teaches about God’s love in action by examining who is called to love and how those called to love are to respond. It is a missions unit in the most basic sense, because the foundational belief is that God’s love reaches out to others in active, participatory ways.

Session One explores what is unique about God’s love and how Christians love in a unique way. We will examine a portion of Scripture written by one of the last “eye-witnesses” of Christ an learn what he emphasized as the most important part of being a Christian. We will observe our own responses to God’s unique love and in the process, hopefully, deepen our own awareness of the wonderful magnitude of God’s love for us. God is love! Let’s find out what that means for us.

Session Two also addresses the issue of what we do with our material goods–our stuff. According to the Bible, the way we share our material goods is directly related to our expression of god’s love in our actions. Are Christians obligated to share their material wealth? Doesn’t the Bible say something about there always being poor people? Does God really care about what we do with our “stuff”?

Session Three focuses on a short command that Jesus gave to his disciples. He told them to be his witnesses in places near and places far. He even used the phrase “the ends of the earth” to describe how far he wanted his disciples to go to witness. This session also explores a passage that talks about the Holy Spirit as the source of power for witnessing.

Session Four examines a passage of scripture that says that God loved us first and we are to love others. This seems like a simple message but it is very difficult to carry out. In this session we will see how our loving others enhances our ability to love god. We will look at barriers to loving others and explore ways that we can learn to show God’s love in our actions.
