“Letting Go and Saying Goodbye”

Teenagers live in a painful world, and many wonder if they can cope with the sadness, pain, and loss of life. Every loss involves some level of grief. This unit focuses on healthy closure: the process of letting go and saying good-bye. The Scripture passages studied in these sessions help youth see that God is with them through a variety of grief-producing experiences, leading them beyond their loss and into a promising future.

Session One is the story of Abraham and Sarah leaving their lifelong homeland. It illustrates the different ways we experience loss. Their loss opened the possibility for something better, and God was with them throughout their difficult experiences. At first glance, this session may seem similar to the one that follows. Although both deal with grief, loss, and hope, Session One attempts to widen the understanding of youth to include not only physical death, but the many different kinds of losses that young people experience. Every loss involves grief, some more than others.

Session Two explores the cries uttered by the writer of Lamentations 3. These pleas are often cried by teenagers today. At first glance. this session may seem similar to the previous one. Although both deal with grief, loss, and hope, Session Two deals with healthy closure and leads youth to struggle with understanding the process of letting go, saying good-bye, and looking to the future with hope.
