“Keeping the Lid On: Handling Stress”
This unit deals with the stress your group may feel by exploring five tension-relieving gifts of God: play, silence, simplicity, friendship and worship. Youth will see that following Jesus means using each of these gifts. While the pressure cooker will not go away, our faith offers youth an invitation to know joy even in the most difficult situations.
Session One: How can churches best minister to youth who are dealing with new pressures? How can youth leaders encourage group members who feel discouraged by the stresses they are facing? This session may provide an opportunity for your youth to name and address the pressures they feel while exploring a faith that finds joy in spite of it all.
Session Two: This session examines the basic idea that we need quiet and solitude to grow in our faith. Youth will see that taking time for silence is an important discipline for their spiritual life.
Session Three: Following Jesus means choosing not to find our identity in material things. Our value is determined by who we are and whose we are, not by what we have. Use this session to challenge the assumption that our value comes from things.
Session Four: Choosing the wrong kinds of friendship can keep youth from living for Jesus. Authentic friendships can help youth serve Christ no matter what tensions they may face. Within your group, there are untapped resources for youth to help each other through their struggles. Use this session to help youth see that friendship is integral to the Christian journey.
Session Five: The experience of worship is not limited to adults. Youth need the forgiveness, joy, and commitment that flows through worship. Use this session to help youth see that following Jesus means learning to worship.
