“A Heart Like God”
By examining four Gospel texts and one Pauline letter, this unit provides youth with the opportunity to see how they can and should prepare for the Messiah. Themes such as ways one can prepare, our responsibility to prepare, answering God’s call, and finding ways to follow God (rather than simply following ideas about Go) are explored through some traditional and nontraditional Advent texts.
Session One: David is described as being “after the heart of God.” While the very idea of this warms us, we are called to put away our romanticized modern view of David.
Session Two: At this stage in life, youth sometimes begin decided not to participate in certain activities rather than face the rejection that goes with being chosen last or not at all. We can help the see the good news that they need and fear no rejection from God. God has already chosen them.
Session Three: Avoiding the issue is one way many of us deal with a large number of our problems. Avoidance is one of the top ways teenagers deal with problems. How can God help us to face the tyrants in our lives?
Session Four: We often forget some of the most powerful and sometimes disarming defense mechanisms we possess–love and creativity. God’s love and creativity give us the ability to repay evil with good. Drawing on this ability is the best response.
