“Heart Conditions”
This unit examines human emotions. We will look at fear, uncertainty, mistrust, depression, and contentment. Our feelings are frequently normal human reactions to the unpredictable changes, uncertainties, trials, and challenges of life. The message of this unit is that God is present with us as we experience a full range of emotions.
Session One explores how God calls us to live by faith in an increasingly violent world. This task is neither easy nor one that comes with simple answers. But as God’s community of faith, we must struggle with the questions raised by the level of violence in our society and come to terms with the question of how to live by faith in a violent world.
Session Two looks at another skeptic. Through the story of doubting Thomas, we will examine our own uncertainties about our lives, ourselves, and God.
Session Three examines the biblical character of Jacob. Though Jacob had difficulties, God still worked through his life to fulfill the promise made to Abraham.
Session Four teaches us to look to the Great Teacher to model for us what to do when the going gets tough. Jesus, through his actions and words, provides a standard that we can all use for coping with the difficult times in life.
Session Five explores what we can learn about joy from a man beaten by the Romans, flogged by the Jews, shipwrecked, and almost drowned, who finally and literally lost his head for Christ. We can learn a lot.
