“Galatians”

The book of Galatians is like a course in “Christianity 101!” These sessions can help youth discover the faith story that is uniquely theirs, explore the connections between belief and action, and learn how to share the church with Christians who are different. This unit also confronts some obstacles that lead us away from Christ and the delicate task of speaking the truth in love.

Session One gives youth the opportunity to discover their unique faith story and practice sharing it. As they examine Paul’s willingness to share his story in Galatians 1:11-24, they may hear a call to share their own.

Session Two provides an opportunity to look at what believing means for a Christian. Who do we believe? What do we believe? How does all this affect the way we live? Use this material to remind your group members what it means to claim faith in Christ. Paul’s message in Galatians 2:11-21 confronts them with the task of determining what they do believe and the challenge to let Christ live in them.

Session Three shows us how aside from our particular church’s enrollment and worship attendance, we are members of a far bigger church than we often realize. There are brothers and sisters in Christ we need to know, and ones we have not yet met or acknowledged. Use this session to show youth that different individuals may find much in common when they focus on the similarities we have through faith in Jesus Christ.

Session Four confronts youth with the obstacles that keep them from growing spiritually. By studying Paul’s message in Galatians 4:1-11, 17-20, your group will look at the ways Christ affects our lives. The hope for this session is that youth will see where they are—and where they are not—in their faith journey.

Session Five is designed to challenge youth with the possibilities that come with God’s gift of freedom. Paul’s instruction in Galatians 5:13-15; 6:1-5, 10 help youth visualize how a person who is free in Christ will respond to the world.
