Crossroads: The Lord Has Done Great Things

Psalm 126

Your Story

Talk about a time when God did something great in your life.

My Story and the Bible Story

“The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.” There are many times I can name when God has done great things for me. When I was in the sixth grade and I didn’t have any friends, God sent me a friend named Jessica. God gave me a wonderful family that has always been there for me and supported me. God showed me what God wanted me to do with my life, and I am so thankful to be a Children’s Minister. Throughout my life, God has done great things for me. Things have not always been great; there have been difficult times, but through it all, God has done great things.

Read Psalm 126. From the NIV: When the Lord brought back the captives to Zion, we were like men who dreamed. Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.” The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy. Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like streams in the Negev. Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. God who goes out weeping carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him.

The Israelites had difficult lives. They had times when things were good, but there were also times when they were captured. They were taken to a different country and they were forced to work very hard there. They were not free. There were times when other countries attacked them and they had to fight for their lives. There were times when they wandered around in the desert for years and years, trusting God but sometimes not trusting God. But then, they were set free! God brought them back to where they belonged. Their hope had come true! And suddenly, they were filled with joy. They could laugh again. God had rescued them. Other nations saw this and said that “the Lord [had] done great things for them.” They knew what God had done for them and they celebrated. Looking back, they could see how the Lord had been doing great things for them throughout their lives.

The Lord does great things for us as well. God created us and God redeemed us. God saves us. God loves us unconditionally (no matter what). God forgives us. And on top of all of that, God blesses us. God gives us a family to take care of us and friends to help us. God gives us talents, things we are good at. God gives us safe places to go. God gives us people who listen to us. God shows us the way to go. Even when things are hard, the Lord is there. Psalm 126 reminds us that those who “sow in tears will reap with songs of joy.” God turns our tears into songs of joy. There will be times when we will be sad. There will be times when we are upset, angry, and frustrated. There will be times when we are hurting. But we can trust that God is there. And that God will do great things. God will turn our tears into songs of joy. The Lord has done great things for us! And God will continue to do great things!

Discussion and Prayer
  • Talk about some of the great things God has done for your family. Be specific.
  • Talk about ways to celebrate what God has done for you and your family. How can you remember what God has done for you?
  • If your family is going through a difficult time, talk about how God will see you through. Look for ways to share with your family how God has turned your tears into songs of joy.

Thank God for the great things God has done for you and your family. Ask for help in recognizing the great things God does.
