Crossroads: Small

Psalm 8

Your Story

Has nature ever just wowed you? Have you ever felt small when looking at the ocean or the stars? Talk about a time when you felt awed by something in nature.

My Story and the Bible Story

The super moon just happened and wow, what a sight to see! It was too cloudy for me to see the super moon and eclipse where I was, but the video of the eclipse and the pictures of the super moon are astounding. The sheer size of the moon in relation to everything else was amazing! When I see a moon like that, or look up at the number of stars in the sky, I feel very small. And when I think about all that God has created, I am astounded that God, the Creator of the Universe, wants to have a relationship with me. The God who set the planets spinning, who creates the clouds in the sky and the fish in the sea, who created everything around us, wants to talk to us. When I think about the vast amount of things that God has created, I feel small and humbled that He wants to spend time with us.

Read Psalm 8 and see how David felt. From the New Living Translation: “O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens. You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength, silencing your enemies and all who oppose you. When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—the moon and the stars you set in place—what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor. You gave them charge of everything you made, putting all things under their authority—the flocks and the herds and all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea, and everything that swims the ocean currents. O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!”

David is right. When we look at all of the things God has made, we realize that we are simply a small part of God’s creation. We realize that there’s no reason that God should care about us and yet God does. God loves us not because we have done something amazing, but because He made us. He created us in His image and He wants to be our friend forever. We may feel small when we look at all of creation, but in God’s eyes we are worthy because He has created us.

Discussion and Action

• Ask your children about things in creation that have made them say “wow!”
• Take time this week to look at the night sky or take a walk through nature. Talk about all the things that God has made

Thank God for all that He has created. Thank Him that even though we are only a small part of creation, He cares about us.
