Crossroads: Rejoice!

Zephaniah 3:14-20

Your Story

Talk about a time when you were so joyful that you started singing. What made you so filled with joy? How did you feel?

My Story and the Bible Story

I love singing praises to God. And when I was a kid, I used to make up songs to sing in praise. And wherever I went, I was singing to God. God’s joy was in my heart and it overflowed into singing. Sometimes it’s hard to sing praises to God. There are times when we don’t feel like singing. There are times when we have really bad days. And there are times when we are worried and anxious and afraid. There are times when we are stressed about tests and projects, and worried about what’s happening in our lives. In those times, it’s hard to sing. It’s hard to feel joyful. But in the times when we struggle to find joy, Zephaniah reminds us that God rejoices over us. We bring God joy, and God takes great delight in us.

Read Zephaniah 3:14-20. From the NIV: The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing. The sorrows for the appointed feasts I will remove from you; they are a burden and a reproach to you. At that time I will deal with all who oppressed you; I will rescue the lame and gather those who have been scattered. I will give them praise and honor in every land where they were put to shame. At that time I will bring you home. I will give you honor and praise among all the peoples of the earth when I restore your fortunes before your very eyes,” says the Lord.

“The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.” The Lord takes great delight in you. Let that sink in. The God who created the Universe takes great delight in you. God not only loves you but you make God smile! Zephaniah reminds us that not only does God take delight in us, but God rejoices over us with song. God sings over us! Can you imagine that heavenly tune when you accepted Jesus? How about God’s song when you help someone else? Or God’s tune when you do what God asked you to, even though it was hard. God sings over us! And when we don’t feel joyful, when we struggle and we go through tough times, God is mighty to save. God is with us and God saves us. We have no need to fear. When we feel anxious and afraid, God quiets us with God’s love.

These verses are life changing because they remind us of God’s joy. They remind us that no matter what, God is there. God calms us with God’s love. God saves us and delights in us. I first heard these verses as a teenager. I was a little awkward and didn’t always feel like I fit in. But these verses reminded me that God created me, that God is always with me, and that God’s love is enough. God knows what we need and God will help us. And God created us to be exactly who we are. And not only that, but God is happy with God’s creation! God is full of joy with how God created you. And God sings over you. Think about that heavenly song this week. How do you think it sounds?

Discussion and Prayer

• What are some things you have done to make God sing? As a family, talk about at least one thing each person has done that you think made God sing.
• What are some things we can do to make God sing?
• When you have a bad day, what are some ways you can remember the joy God put in you?
Pray, thanking God for how God has created you and praise God for being mighty to save. Ask for help in quieting your anxiety/fear/etc. Ask for help in remembering your joy.
