Crossroads: Never Alone

John 14:15-21

Your Story

Talk about a time when you felt really alone. How did you feel? Did someone help you? Did you turn to God?

My Story and the Bible Story

When I was in the sixth grade, I felt like I didn’t have any friends. Our church was going through a tough time and I didn’t have any friends there. And my best friends at school no longer wanted to be friends with me. I felt very alone. I prayed, asking God to help me feel less alone, to remind me that God was with me. Not only did God remind me of God’s presence, but God even sent me a friend! A girl named Jessica moved to our school in the middle of the year. We were great friends until we went to Middle School and she moved again. But for that time, God reminded me that I wasn’t alone.

There are always times when we feel very alone. Maybe we are actually alone and we’re the only one in the house, a classroom, the movies, etc. Or maybe you feel most alone in a crowd of people because you don’t feel like anybody sees you. Or maybe right now you feel like you don’t have any friends and you feel very alone. Whatever it is, however you feel, know that you are never alone!

Read John 14:15-21. From The Message: If you love me, show it by doing what I’ve told you. I will talk to the Father, and he’ll provide you with another Friend so that you will always have someone with you. This Friend is the Spirit of Truth. The godless world can’t take him in because it doesn’t have eyes to see him, doesn’t know what to look for. But you know him already because he has been staying with you, and will even be in you! I will not leave you orphaned. I’m coming back. In just a little while the world will no longer see me, but you’re going to see me because I am alive and you’re about to come alive. At that moment you will know absolutely that I’m in my Father, and you’re in me, and I’m in you. The person who knows my commandments and keeps them, that’s who loves me. And the person who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him (her) and make myself plain to him (her).

You are never alone because the Holy Spirit is with you. The Spirit of Truth shows you what you should do. Thousands of years ago, Jesus and the Father knew that we would need Someone with us. We cannot do everything on our own. In fact, the Holy Spirit not only shows us what we should do, but also helps us do it! The Holy Spirit gives us courage when we need it and the strength we need to do something hard. The Holy Spirit never leaves us. But here’s the tricky thing: we can’t see the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit isn’t like the rest of our friends who we see at school or call on the phone. We can’t see the Spirit, but we can feel the Spirit. When we pray and ask God for help, the Holy Spirit helps us. When we pray and ask God for strength, courage, love, etc., the Holy Spirit helps us. When we pray because we are afraid, the Holy Spirit helps us then too. You see, we are never alone because the Holy Spirit, God’s Spirit, is always with us. God never leaves us. So when you feel alone, remember that the Holy Spirit is there. And ask God to help you not feel so lonely. God’s always there and God’s always willing and ready to listen to you!

• Talk about a time when you have felt alone. What was happening? Why did you feel alone? Did you talk to someone about it?
• How can we help others not feel so alone?
• Have you ever felt the Holy Spirit? Have you ever felt like God was right there with you?

Thank God for the Holy Spirit, who is always with us. Thank God that we are never entirely alone. Ask for help in remembering that the Spirit is with us.
