Psalm 62:5-12
Your Story
Tell your family about a time when God was your refuge. Perhaps, like me, you were afraid of storms and God comforted you. Or maybe God was there for you during another trying time of your life. Talk about how it feels to know that God is with us.
My Story and the Bible Story
I was terrified of thunderstorms as a child. The thunder would get so loud that I just knew something bad would happen to me. I would run to my mom, crying, when the thunder boomed and scared me. I couldn’t wait for those storms to be over. As I got older, my mom taught me to pray in the midst of storms. As the thunder boomed, I’d pray that God would keep me safe and that the storm would soon be over. Passages like Psalm 62 would comfort me and remind me that I could trust God and that God was my refuge in the storm. I would pray for peace, and although the storm wasn’t over, I would feel God’s comfort, reminding me that God was there. The storms would eventually end and I would feel safe again. It was during these storms, though, that I learned that God is always with us.

Our hope comes from God. God is our refuge and we can trust God, both through actual storms and through the storms of life. Our God has created us, loves us, and is always there for us. Bad things will still happen and there are times when we will be hurt, but we can trust that God will always be there and will be our refuge. Because we live in this world, we will still have pain, but we can always run to God no matter what. We can trust that God will take our pain and turn it into something good and that, in the end, God’s love will conquer all.
Discussion and Prayer
- As a family, talk about ways that each of you needs to trust God. Perhaps it is trusting God in the storm like me. Or maybe your child needs to trust God to help with a bully. Talk about how God can be our refuge.
- Remind each other this week that God is our refuge and that we can trust God.
- If you have a neighbor, family member, or friend who is going through a hard time, share this passage with them as well as a story from your own life about how God has been your refuge.
- Pray, thanking God for always being there for us. Ask for help in trusting God through everything that happens.
