Brief Description

Purpose of A Heart for Missions
The purpose of A Heart for Missions is to help children learn from biblical examples of missions, help them identify the needs of their own community, and involve them in a hands-on experience of missions.

Purpose of ICU
The purpose of ICU is to provide contemporary missions stories about young people so the children (interns) will learn that they, too, can be missionaries.

ICU (I-see-you) is primarily storytelling. The person who leads this station should be someone who feels comfortable telling stories. The doctor can read the stories to the interns, but a bit of preparation before a session would allow the leader more freedom to respond to the intern’s interactions. The stories included can be seen as examples. If you have a story from your own experience that would complement the lesson, tell it instead. If you decide to use your own story, it will be helpful to think about it in these terms:

• Description of the main characters. Include information about the characters’ family, hobbies, school, etc.
• Symptoms--How did they notice the problem?
• Diagnosis--How did they understand the problem? What did they feel?
• Treatment--What did they do?

One of the goals is to help the children realize that they, too, can be mission heroes. Interns will experience these stories differently depending on their age and development, but even the youngest intern learns by example. The stories, therefore, are stories of children doing missions.

We use a medical model of Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment to provide the interns a way to interpret their experiences. This model will be used in other stations, so there will be some overlap. Remember that children play doctor, teacher, house, and other make-believe games with little, if any, instruction. Using this model should be fun during A Heart for Missions, and it should also serve as a model for interns even after the end of the week. The last day’s story will be about the A Heart for Missions experience. It will summarize the activities and help the interns understand that all week long they have been missionary heroes by participating, specifically, in Lab Work, where they create and carry out actual missions projects.
