Brief Description
The lessons of this unit are to be taught during the season of Lent. Many Christians use the 40 days of the Lenten season to prepare for the celebration of Easter resurrection. The Scripture texts for this unit encourage and inspire us to consider our need for repentance and change as we prepare for Easter celebration.

Examining our lives in relation to Jesus' life is the work of Lent. It is the business of repentance, the challenge of preparation. May we, then, as we approach the celebration of Easter, work diligently so that, when the celebration comes, we can experience it with a joy and enthusiasm we have never known.

Jesus reads from the scroll of Isaiah in Session One. Here Jesus proclaimed himself Savior to the poor, the captive, the blind, and the oppressed. How can following Jesus provide release for you, for those you, and for those you love?

Session Two discusses when Jesus taught at the synagogue in Galilee. Jesus made his audience uncomfortable when his understanding of the prophet's words differed from their opinion. What aspects of Jesus' ministry and teaching makes us uncomfortable? Which of Jesus' teachings do yo most want to avoid embracing?

Session Three explores how Peter, a tired fisherman, is called to be someone far beyond what he ever imagined he could become.

Session Four offers the healing hope of God through Jesus Christ. Jesus' choice to risk involving himself in relationships would eventually reap for him the pain and suffering of crucifixion. Yet we must also remember that in the midst of that suffering, Jesus spoke his most powerful words of forgiveness. How have you experienced being forgiven?

Session Five examines those people Jesus called. Jesus Jesus chose to associate with the "common people" of his time, who might he choose in the twentieth century?
