"David: The Later Years" is a four session adult Bible study in the books of 2 Samuel and 1 Kings, including learner's materials, teaching guides, and handouts. The teaching guide is options-based, so teachers can customize sessions to match their favorite approach.
Session One explores David's struggle with faithfulness to God and enticing temptations. This passage is a significant detailing of how God can forgive and work thorugh people who are anything but perfect, including a king.
Session Two discusses how King David became a taker--conveniently and selfishly taking what was not his, giving little or no thought to the ramifications of his taking. This session allows us the knowledge that attempts to cover up our sins are ultimately futile. These cover-up schemes may fool the people, but they do not deceive God.
Session Three chronicles the relationship David has with his sons, namely Absalom. David was a highly successful monarch, but as a father he did not meet the same speculations. Adults have multiple roles (parents, children, employers, employees, spouses, friends, etc.), although success in any one role depletes ones time and resources. Would this not explain why David was a better king than father?
Session Four closes David's reign. He is old and is nearing the end of is kingship, but first he must get his affairs in order by focusing on his legacy and prepare the person who will succeed him.
