Matthew 15:29-39

“I have compassion for these people. They have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry or they may collapse on the way.” —Matthew 15:32

You are a whole person. You have a spirit that longs for God. You have a brain that produces an electrical storm even when sleeping. You have a body that needs food and water to operate. You are all of these functioning parts. You are a whole person. A three-legged stool that cannot function with a missing leg. You might try, but eventually, you would collapse.

Abraham Maslow theorized that we have a hierarchy of needs beginning with our physical need for sustenance. How can we feed the spirit or the mind of one with a grumbling tummy? Any schoolteacher can attest to the truth of this theory. A hungry child cannot focus on math. A hungry child needs breakfast.

Jesus understood that you and I are whole people: body, mind, and spirit. In Matthew, he feeds 5,000 people and then a couple of chapters later, he feeds 4,000 more. He sees their need and looks on them with compassion. There is no conversation about how those folks should have packed a picnic. The people were hungry; Jesus fed them.

There are whole people all around us. People with spirits, bodies, and minds—all needing to be fed. We, who are to have the same mind as Christ, are responsible for feeding those whole people around us. We are even responsible for feeding that whole person in the mirror.

“Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus…” —Philippians 2:5
