“Worship: A View for the Back Pew”

The sessions in this unit are devoted to discovering and valuing three different kinds of worship experiences: silence in worship, celebration through worship, and symbols in worship.

Session One explores the importance of silence for quiet moments of reflection. Some churches plan for times of meaningful silence during the worship hour. Free from cluttering words and without musical distractions, worshippers can devote a small portion of time to focusing on God and God’s presence in their lives. Elijah experienced God in silence, although, like many of us, he looked for God everywhere else first. In this session, you and the teenagers in your group will consider the value and the possibility of worshipping in silence.

Session Two considers the role of youth during the worship service. Many youth leaders, unfortunately, feel like getting their young people to be attentive in worship is a difficult task. In this session, we will attempt to reclaim the joy of worshipping God by examining the worship of Israel’s King David. As young people examine their motives for worship, perhaps their enthusiasm will increase, too.

Session Three will help young people focus on the symbols used in their worship and how those symbols can enhance the worship time. Perhaps they will carry some of their music-video enthusiasm into worship, once they recognize a common denominator! They may find that there is more than meets the eye in their opportunities for worship.
