“What’s in a Psalm?”

“What’s in a Psalm?” serves as an introduction to the book of Psalms, or the Psalter. This unit enables young people to be more comfortable with the diversity of materials and terms within the book so Psalms. These sessions on the various types of psalms will enable youth to use the Psalter to enrich their prayer life.

Session One begins the growing process for Younger Youth by helping them redefine their understanding of “the company they keep.” It will help them realize that their choice of company influences their growth as children of God. They will identify the company they need to keep and company they need to part with, ultimately taking the step of covenanting with God to do so.

Session Two seeks to teach them the importance of crying out to God with their needs while at the same time praising and expressing their confidence. God knows our needs and welcomes our praise, but an important benefit of crying out is that it actually helps us to turn our burdens over to God instead of trying to shoulder them ourselves.

Session Three strives to help Younger Youth consider the various influences that shape how they respond to situations in their lives. Equally important, it helps them to realize that they always have a choice in how they respond. Finally, it challenges them to let their responses reflect their faith. Without a doubt, it is a session for all of us.

Session Four’s learning tension focuses on how we can help others to praise God. Before we can reach that step, however, we must learn to praise God ourselves. This session looks at reasons for and ways to praise God.
