“Risk Yourself for God”

In this unit, teenagers are challenged to risk themselves in service to God. Mission experiences benefit the servant, too, but only when we take the risk. These sessions lay a biblical foundation for mission opportunities your group has either planned, will plan, or has experienced already.

In Session One, teenagers consider how to more willingly meet the needs of others. As Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 9:19-23, we can make serving others a higher priority than indulging ourselves with personal freedoms and comforts. When we risk our familiar routines, we experience holy adventures.

Session Two challenges youth to participate in God’s work by using their talents and abilities. A study of Matthew 25:14-30 helps young people consider the purpose of their gifts and how risking their talents and abilities through service can deepen their relationship with God.

Session Three poses the question, “How is God asking me to change?” The story of the rich young man in Matthew 19:16-26 points out Jesus’ call to risk who we are for who we may become. The story helps us see that we cannot control the Christ we follow. God leads us to people, places, and broader understandings that we could not imagine on our own.

Session Four challenges teens to commit themselves more completely to God. Youth are encouraged to experience the truth of Matthew 16:24-26: if they are willing to give up what they want in order to follow Christ, they will actually find the life they are seeking. Young people are encouraged in this session to dedicate their lives to God.
