“Preparing for the Messiah”

By examining four Gospel texts and one Pauline letter, this unit provides youth with the opportunity to see how they can and should prepare for the Messiah. Themes such as ways one can prepare, our responsibility to prepare, and answering God’s call and finding ways to follow God (rather than simply following ideas about God) are explored through some traditional and nontraditional Advent texts.

Session One teaches us about what it means to be “always ready” for the coming Messiah. We will explore how God is present with us every day and how our realization of that presence can make our living more meaningful.

Session Two encourages our thinking about how we can prepare the way for the coming Messiah. Some of these ways are personal and individual, while some ways extend to the entire world.

Session Three looks at the seeming impossibilities Mary faced when God told her she would give birth to Jesus. We will learn about her willingness to say “Yes” to God, and explore how we, too, can say “Yes” to god who makes all things possible.

Session Four offers opportunities to look at our own lives, to examine how God wants us to live, in light of Jesus’ coming.

Session Five explores the difference between living by a set of rules and living by the spirit of the rules. Rules are important, but they do not contain life. Following God brings life.
