“Conflict Resolution”

The sessions in this unit deal with these issues. Whether we own it or not, we all have a style, good or bad, of conflict resolution. The Bible provides some important help on this subject. Within the biblical story there are good role models, advice on how to resolve conflict, and encouragement for those who deal with conflict.

These sessions begin with a focus on resolving personal conflict. Taken from Romans 12:9-12, session 1 looks at Paul’s advice to the church at Rome. His words are especially applicable for people who face pressure from peers.

Session 2 moves from personal conflict to family conflicts. Universal for all families are ongoing conflicts between parents and children as well as conflicts between siblings. The story of Jacob and Esau provides an important biblical perspective on family conflicts and resolution.

Session 3 widens the circle to include community conflict. As human beings we are communal by nature. We need each other. All communities, however, have their conflicts and therefore we must learn to deal effectively and peacefully with one another. Paul’s concern for the divided Ephesian community was to bring them together.

Session 4, global conflict, looks at the words of the prophet Micah. Resolving conflict in faraway places may seem irrelevant or overwhelming to young people. In our world, however, despair and hopelessness are rampant. For us to learn to live together, we must learn to work with and understand one another. The prophet’s voice provides hope for such global peace.
