“Becoming a Christian”

This unit presents the basic message of salvation in fresh and inviting ways. John 3:16 is among the best known and loved passages in Christian Scripture. When it is read together, 3:16-18 provides a concise summary of the biblical message of salvation.

In Session One we discover that Nicodemus did not understand Jesus’ talk about being born anew and of the Spirit. This session uses the story of Nicodemus to help teenagers understand that making a conscious decision to follow Christ is a beginning step in a new orientation of the total person, an alignment of heart and will to the love of God and a commitment of loyalty and trust to God’s purpose and Christ’s teachings.

Session Two focuses on salvation as an already-but-not-yet matter. We often talk about becoming a Christian as if it involved only a single decisive moment when a person declares their faith in Christ. Paul certainly confirmed that salvation occurs at a specific point in time (Rom 8:24). He also indicated that God’s saving activity is an ongoing and unfinished process. We are works-in-process, and even when we fail, God does not give up on us.

Session Three highlights the biblical personality Zacchaeus and explores actions we can take after we have declared faith in Christ. Moved by God’s grace, love, and forgiveness, Zacchaeus made a sudden and radical change in lifestyle. His remarkable transformation offers guidance for anyone who wonders what to do after declaring faith in Christ. The example of Zacchaeus shows that a genuine response to God’s mercy is evident in how one chooses to live.
