Words taken from Ephesians 6:10-17
Music by Johnie Dean
This is an SATB anthem with some divisi, the accompaniment is keyboard. The opening choral section is a strong statement of the text: "be strong in the Lord", while the stanzas tend to be more introspective. Care should be taken to make the quarter-note triplets even, both in the vocal lines as well as the accompaniment. The ending is a big one, with full chords and dynamics to match.
This is a rather stately tune on the recurring refrain, but keep the voices ‘reined in’ until the last pages. The men singing the move to the CODA need to make that jump with a good crescendo--this will aid the modulation into Ab Major. The accompaniment has many spots for them to shine--especially enjoy the 16th-note arpeggios on pp. 7-8.
This anthem would work well for organ and piano to accompany the choir. One could try adding the instrumentalists at different points so their individual color is more effective, rather than both playing all the time. Another option is to allow one instrument to help with the choral parts, while the other plays the accompaniment--be creative!
