Words by John Cashion
Composed by John Cashion
In the hectic pace of most people's lives, there is often a longingnostalgia for something simpler, less complex. Many often decry the overrun state of their lives. John Cashion has written a sensitive text and anthem that offers this devotional sentiment: "I need a simple faith, not shallow or unthinking, nor pre-conceived or blind; But simple as a seed that grows in open heart and open mind. Give me a simple faith, in One who clearly knows me, whose care for me is sure; So when I am most prone to doubt Your love, Your strength keeps me secure." The candor of this text merged with the music creates a quiet intent for a deeper understanding of the Christian walk.
Reflecting the contemplative nature of the text, the vocal lines are quite singable and express the tenor of the text wonderfully. Note the quiet statement: 'I need a simple faith?' pages 2 and 5. John allows the texture of the song to grow on the phrase: 'But simple as a seed that grows?' pages 3 and 6. Also blended into the mixture is the well-known Shaker tune, "Simple Gifts"one finds it in the introduction, interlude, and altered slightly on page 8. This, along with the warm phrases from the old hymn, "Only Trust Him", adds poignancy to the work. Choirs and congregants will desire more of "A Simple Faith."
Though scored for SATB with piano, much of the anthem employs unison and two-part singing. This is not by accident, but is a valuable tool for presenting the text. The natural rhythms of the words should be reflected in the choral lines the choir sings. The last page has some effective chordal writing with altos and sopranos having some limited divisi. One might also consider allowing the tune, 'Simple Gifts' to be performed on another instrument, preferably violin or flute.
