| Words and Music by Johnny Carr and Don Phillips
It is exciting to sing about the love of God, and this new anthem captures that enthusiasm. From the opening bars in the accompaniment to the exultant conclusion, Don’s and Johnny’s piece is a powerful paean of praise. Add to this the dancing accompaniment and one finds a dynamic treatment that your choir will enjoy and want to sing again and again. An added bonus is this: take the last page and half (mm. 49-end) and use this as a choral call to worship, it stands alone as well as part of the whole piece. The syncopation of the text, "He’ll give you strength to win, take away all your sin..." is a brilliant addition to the piece--it breaks the running eighth-note pattern and causes the singer (and the listener) to sit up and take notice. In the words of a television commercial: Add this piece to your choir’s reperoire, "you’ll be glad you did!"
"Let All His People Sing!" will be a challenge for the accompanist--he/she needs to work the octaves and arpeggios so that they are fluid and effortless. Strive to keep the choir from overdoing the ‘jah!’ in ‘Hallelujah!’. Also, watch the word ‘your’; have the choir concentrate on the ooh vowel and sing it "y’ooh’r" rather than ‘yer’. On the penultimate chord, only one or two voices are needed on the uppermost parts, this will allow the high ‘a’ and ‘c’ to ring through without overpowering the whole choir.
Allusion has been made above to lifting a portion of this work as a separate call to worship--do it, it is being a good steward and it reinforces the congregation’s hearing of the text/tune. If this anthem is used for Palm Sunday, have it follow a scripture of Jesus’ triumphal entry so that the Biblical text is echoed by this musical setting.
