Especially apropos for younger children, Ms. Fightmaster’s "Jesus Is Born" makes a delightful Christmas addition. Repetitive vocal lines with changing accompaniment ensure ease of learning. A memorable tune that ends each stanza with ‘Jesus is born’ allows the children to proclaim the ‘good news’ of Jesus Christ’s birth through different means [singing, ringing bells, tapping sticks, shaking a tambourine, playing drums]. The hardest part of learning this anthem will be tempering the children’s enthusiasm so that they don’t do all those things at the same time.
A complement to this work involves dividing the children into four groups and giving them their own instruments. Allow them to play on their stanza, using the following rhythm as they sing it: [Ring-a-ling-a-ling / Tap-a-tap-a-tap / Shake-a-shake-a-shake / Boom-a-boom-a-boom]. With younger singers, one must stress the importance of singing all the time, while only playing at their specific time. This will take concentrated effort, but the results will be worth it. Use the following: ‘ring bells’ hand-held jingle bells / ‘tap sticks’ rhythm sticks / ‘shake tambourine’ only one or two tambourines / ‘play drum’ small drums. (Most of these instruments can be hand-made)
