| Words and Music by Don Phillips
SATB with some divisi sections, this statement of faith and assurance is a delight to sing. Commissioned for a church’s sesquicentennial (150th) anniversary, this original work sings very easily, the melodic lines flow throughout. The refrain’s text is especially forthright: "He’s with us still, God never changes, He’s with us still! We’ll trust His grace, we’ll claim His power, we’ll follow where He leads, He’s with us still." In this fast-paced, continually-evolving world we live in, isn’t it assuring to know that we serve a God ‘who was, who is, and is to come.’" Also included is a congre-gational page to duplicate, so that one’s congregants can sing along as well.
Don has crafted a beautiful testament of faith, uniting a strong text with a singable line. This strong work will enhance most worship services, but finds an even greater usage during celebratory times, especially anniversaries or stewardship services. If one opts not to have the congregation sing with the choir, then care must be taken to keep the upper voices from overshadowing the melody in the alto and bass (mm. 23-30). Attention should also be given to the text in places where the melody stays on one pitch for several eighth-notes; let the more important words/syllables receive the stress on pp. 1-3.
The congregation is invited to sing the refrain with the choir. To ensure that those in attendance feel confident to sing with the choir, have one of your choristers teach the congregation their part just before the service begins. This moment of congregational rehearsal will inspire them as they get caught up in the singing of this anthem--how exciting to have a full worship facility filled with a ‘choir’ singing about our ever-constant God.
