Written by Gilbert Roller and others
Composed by Gilbert Roller
Gilbert Roller presents service music that leads us into the presence of the Lord. In this collection of four worship invitations, Gilbert centers on a Trinitarian theme: God, the Father (1. "We Come Unto Our Father"), Christ, the Son (4. "Jesus Where'er Thy People Meet"), and the Holy Spirit (2. "Spirit of Life" and 3. O Spirit of the Living God").
Roller uses an alternate text with #3, "O Spirit of the Living God, Thou Light and Fire divine: Descend upon Thy Church once more and make it truly Thine." Note the allusion to Pentecost. Earl Marlatt's text, "Spirit of Life" contains more vivid imagery: "
Touch Thou our dust with spirithand.
" This piece offers the most harmonic freedom, with shifts between minor and modal passages. "Spirit of Life" also presents the most challenge for the choral group. This collection provides a welcome variety for worship/service music, with approaches to text and music that are not only refreshingly new, but also appropriate for a broad spectrum of worship resources.
The first piece in this collection requires the tenors to be precise in their descending chromatic line. Care must be given to avoid sagging the tone and pitch. "Spirit of Life" affords the choir the chance to spread its wings a bit morecare must be taken to ensure that all harmonies are sung as written, there are several moments when the singer's ear may lead them to the wrong note, thus changing the quality of the harmonies. As alluded to in Roller's other service music collection, "Before Thy Throne," learn these gradually and allow them to become infused into your choir's and congregation's worship vocabulary.
