Gilbert Roller has crafted a set of beautiful and intriguing service music. In this collection of eight prayer invitations, Gilbert expresses a variety of themes.
The imagery in the texts evokes devotional fervor: "Come, O Lord, like morning dew
" "Before Thy throne we lay our hearts
" "Now our quiet soul rejoices
" "Go before us, work within us, make our life your own." Numbers 1, 3, 5 and 7 are more introspective, and reflect an inner devotional intent. #2, "O Master" offers the choral group some challenges in its 11 measures, while #6 and #8 offer some colorful harmonic shifts. This collection provides a welcome variety for worship/service music, with approaches to text and music that are not only refreshingly new, but also appropriate for a broad spectrum of worship resources.
Scored for SATB, preferably a cappella, one needs to spend an appropriate amount of rehearsal time to ensure that the ensemble is confident, even though these pieces are more devotional in content and presentation. Because of the newness of Roller's works, one should refrain from plowing straight through the entire collection. Rather, learn them gradually and allow them to blossom into the choir's repertoire, let them become part of your choir and congregation's worship vocabulary.
