In the 1950s, most churchgoers worshiped in the same ways, heard
the same texts preached, and studied the same Sunday school lessons. Sometimes I miss those "good ol' days." However, the world isn't the
same as it was then. The kind of church that worked then probably
wouldn't thrive now. Today, we must be the church in a new place, in
unimagined ways, and with a wider range of people. We are called to
the radical and refreshing challenge of developing a "missional
lifestyle."
A missional lifestyle involves more than simply supporting missions and maintaining the church program. It is about sharing the love of Christ whether or not anyone joins our church! A missional lifestyle challenges us to be the presence of Christ in our community and in our world.
Living this way does not come naturally. For too long, we've talked about cooperating without being cooperative. We've talked about doing missions boldly without going across the street. A missional lifestyle helps us move from talking about God to participating with God. Through a missional lifestyle, we move from maintaining the institutional church to serving the living God.
The following Bible study sessions will help you strive to live a missional lifestyle. As you think about the call to be missional, first commit to being more intentional about living out your faith. Then commit to being the presence of Christ unconditionally to the world around you.
As your class works through these sessions, examine your passion for living as a Christian. Think about what needs to be changed in your
life. Perhaps you will emerge from this study transformed. Together, we can make these the "good new days"!
