2. Exodus 2:1-10
3. Exodus 2:16-25
Exodus, a dramatic epic, contains the elements of changing timesoppression, fortitude, risk, deception, destruction, deliverance, and remembranceall in the first two chapters! The reading and telling of the exodus story, however, most often concentrates on Moses and the exodus of the Hebrews from the clutches of the Egyptian pharaoh. But what about the events that take place prior to the deliverance? What happened to the prosperous Hebrews in the land of Egypt? How did things become so desperate, and why? What and who changed? Where is God in these stories? These are but a few of the questions that will surface if we take the time to read and explore the stories of the first two chapters.
Read the stories of this unit remembering that they take place in the "in-between" times. They take place between the prosperous years of God’s promise to Abraham and his descendants and the days of intervention and deliverance by God through Moses. These stories reveal not only the plight of the Hebrew people during this time, but also the activity and attitude of the people in the face of challenge and change.
The characters within these stories demonstrate a faithfulness that comes from within, faithfulness not dependent upon external acknowledgment or reward, but one that reveals their true character. Women have a prominent role in these stories, although they are not in traditional places of leadership. These women speak to us about the value, usefulness, and opportunity that each person has as a servant of God.
The Egyptian leadership had undergone significant change, resulting in different living conditions for the Hebrews. In other words, the rules regarding how things worked and related changed drastically. With the change came pain, suffering, and destruction. Times such as these call for risk-taking, bold action, and strong faith. What can we learn from our ancestors of faith for times such as these in which we live?
