1. Jonah 1
2. Jonah 4
Barbara Brown Taylor, in her powerful book Speaking of Sin, wrote, "There are words in the Christian language that have no equivalent in the other languages we speak, such as the languages of business, law, or psychology. When we lose the religious words, we lose the hold they have on the realities they represent" ((23). Two of those Christian words with no equivalent are "judgment" and "grace." "Grace" and "judgment" belong to the language of faith. They live on the same street with some other words from the vocabulary of faith, words like "sin" and "confession" and "repentance."
For the next two Sundays, "judgment" and "grace" will be the words we ponder. We will look at judgment and grace through the lens of a familiar story and parable of judgment and grace, the story of Jonah, a whale of a story about judgment and grace...judgment for Jonah when he turned from God and grace for the Ninevites when they turned to God.
