As we move through this unit, we examine different parts of a sure and solid foundation for faithful discipleship. In “Telling the Truth,” we explore the phrase “telling the truth in love” as one part of a strong foundation. In the second session, we learn that we cannot be faithful until we first recognize our own faithlessness. Next, in Luke 6:17-26, generally referred to as “The Sermon on the Plain,” we find that Jesus came down to “level ground” to live and do ministry among the people. Faithful discipleship is lived on “level ground” as we interact and relate to our world. We live in a world that glorifies activity, busyness, and action. In the fourth session, from Luke 9:28-36, we find that faithful discipleship involves stopping and listening. Finally, in his first appearance after his baptism in Luke, we find Jesus facing the devil and temptation in the wilderness. Jesus found the strength he needed to withstand temptation by clinging to Scripture.
While these five parts of the foundation of faithful discipleship are not exhaustive, they are important if we want to live in the world as faithful disciples of the risen Lord.
