"The Message of Advent" is a five session Bible study for adults, including learner's materials, teaching guides, and handouts. The teaching guide is options-based, so teachers can customize sessions to match their favorite approach.
This unit leads us to consider, in new ways, the meaning of the Christ's birth. The witness of John the Baptist, Mary's acceptance of God's seemingly impossible will, and Paul's teaching about the centrality of Christ--all point us to look again at the manger and consider the message wrapped up in those swaddling clothes.
Session One explores our wait for the future when it seems overdue. How are we to understand God's purpose and live it as we wait for God's ultimate fulfillment?
Session Two concerns an unusual man who ate locusts. While you and I might not want to accept his invitation to Sunday dinner, in the this season we do need to hear the message of the one preparing the way of the Lord.
Session Three continues to study John the Baptist. John 1:6-8, 19-28 identifies John the Baptist as a witness to Christ. How can Christians emulate John the Baptist's message today?
Session Four explores Gabriel's announcement to Mary that she will give birth to the Christ child. The birth of Jesus is truly an unequaled event.
Session Five summarizes Paul's message in Galatians: Both Gentile Christians and Jewish Christians are children of God through faith in Jesus Christ.
