The One-Hundredth Psalm is a five session Bible study for adults, including learner's materials, teaching guides, and handouts. The teaching guide is options-based, so teachers can customize sessions to match their favorite approach.
This unit focuses on Psalm 100. We will probe the depths of its meaning so that we may experience it with new power and sing it with new joy. The danger will be that, in looking closely a the detail of this powerful poem, we may miss the experience of the whole. As we explore these five verses, perhaps we will find it helpful to follow some basic suggestions that have been pivotal in the worship experience of the people of God.
Session One focuses on the first verse of Psalm 100. The experience of worship is at the center of the church's life and, too often today, the focus of its conflict. In such a time a body of believers needs to reflect on the meaning and purpose of worship.
Session Two explores the act of coming into God's presence with singing as a high-risk activity. The Psalmist calls us to involve our total selves in response to the living God. This worship is the way of commitment to the God whose costly love for us "demands; my soul, my life, my all."
Session Three concentrates on verse 3. Let the truth of this verse prepare you for worship. After all worship essentially begins when we recognize who God is and who we are in relation to God.
Session Four focuses on the expression of gratitude in a manner that fills words with qualities of a thankful heart. Blessing the name of God is the only appropriate response when we realize life is a gift, something not earned that we can receive only in gratitude.
Session Five explores the basic quest for meaning in life by deepening one's relationship with the living God. This session looks at the psalmists call for people to acknowledge the Lord openly and to center their lives in the Lord without reservation.
