Colossians 3:12-17

Your Story

Talk about a time when you have shown compassion and love to someone else.

My Story and the Bible Story

Do you ever have those days when you look in your closet and you can’t find anything to wear? Sure, there are probably plenty of clothes in your closet but on that day you just don’t like anything and you wish you had something different.

Thankfully, the Christian life isn’t like that. God has already picked out “clothes” for us, and we never have to worry that they won’t fit. Read Colossians 3:12-17. From The Message: “So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it. Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. Let the Word of Christ—the Message—have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.”

God has given us these “clothes”: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, and discipline. He has also given us love and forgiveness to put on. Sometimes these are hard “clothes” to wear because they mean that we have to take second place. We can’t put ourselves first when we wear God’s clothes, because God calls us to put others first. When someone makes us angry or hurts us, we are called to forgive. God wants us to be kind to others, even when they aren’t always kind to us. And He wants us to care for others when they are hurting. When we wear God’s clothes, we slowly become more like Jesus. We grow in our faith and we learn to help others. It’s not always easy to wear God’s clothes, but they are the best clothes out there, because they help us become more like Jesus!

Discussion

• Ask your children about ways they can be kind to others and show God’s love to them.
• Talk about ways our actions and our words can show people who Jesus is.
• What is one thing you and your family can do this week to show compassion or kindness to others?

Prayer

Ask God for help us wear the “clothes” God has given us. Ask God to help you and your family be kind to others, forgive them when they don’t deserve it, and show God’s love to everyone.
